For 2025, Toyota has done some additional, practical innovations with the Mirai. It is a hydrogen cell vehicle; a model one can see as an electric vehicle without the need to plug in to charge. If you live in or near Carlsbad or Santee, you can find this Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) at Toyota of Poway. Check our inventory of new vehicles and find the model that works best for you.

How Does an FCEV Work?

A fuel cell electric vehicle uses its own on-board fuel system to generate electricity through a chemical reaction between compressed hydrogen gas mixed with purified oxygen. This reaction produces electricity, which is then stored in a lithium-ion battery. The Mirai also has a regenerative braking system to add additional electricity to the battery that, along with its fuel cell, offers up to 402 miles of range between hydrogen refills. When the chemical reaction between hydrogen and purified oxygen occurs, the only waste biproduct that is produced is water which is expelled from a vent pipe beneath the vehicle.

When you press the accelerator, it opens the circuit that allows the flow of electric power to reach the AC Synchronous electric motor, which drives the rear wheels. Air that enters the system goes through an air compressor to be pressurized and cooled before it enters the fuel sack, a water-cooled oil cooler integrated with the air compressor that helps to enhance the efficiency of the process.

Mirai’s Design

Mirai is built on a GA-L Premium RWD chassis, creating a luxurious mid-size sedan that provides an engaging driving experience. The superior strength platform is designed with a sophisticated multilink suspension to provide excellent handling and agility, and a smooth, comfortable ride. Mirai is designed with a long and wide stance that offers cutting edge sophistication, and the bold design provides a sense of movement with a sweeping roofline, long hood, and a shorter deck. The wheels are 19 inches, and with proper all-season tires, it perpetuates a more modern look.

Mirai’s front-end design sports auto-leveling bi-beam LED headlights and multi-LED front and rear turn signal indicators, daytime running and clearance lights. LED mirror lights are etched with the Mirai logo. The rear end is designed with a thin LED taillight panel to create a unique nighttime signature with distinct gradation lines.

Technology

High-tech driver-assistive technology and advanced interior technology help wrap up the entire Mirai package with available features like a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen display and an accompanying 12.3-inch gauge cluster. An ECO drive indicator helps maximize fuel efficiency by providing acceleration guidance and assigning economical driving scores. Hydrogen fuel levels and estimated remaining range are always displayed.

Power devices with a Qi-compatible wireless charging tray, one USB Media port, 3 USB Type C Charging ports and a 12V DC socket in the center console. The Toyota Media system provides many options for connectivity, including Over-The-Air (OTA) updates, and users can interact with the system through touch and voice activation. You’ll also feel better protected with driver-assistive features like:

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Full-Speed range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • Automatic High Beams
  • Proactive Driving Assist
